Therapists-to-be

“I don’t know what I’m doing, who is trusting me to see clients, tell me what to do, can I even do this job?” I have worked with and supervised so many up-and-coming therapists and this is often what I hear at the beginning of their journey.

Despite all the training and teaching we go through we are not immune to our own issues. The nature of our profession exposes us to the emotional pain, sorrows, trials and traumas. How we learn how to carry that for our clients without burdening our soul, getting compassion fatigue, having vicarious trauma, or burnout is crucial. We work hard to keep our shit together when we get triggered and check ourselves before we wreck ourselves (you know…countertransference).

The demanding nature of our work, the pressure to maintain a professional image and provide consistent excellent support leaves little room for us to give a shit about ourselves. But you know how important self-care is and how it impacts the work you do. You are super insightful and know you can benefit from your own healing. You understand the power of being in your own treatment when you are a provider of that treatment. Together we will make sure you are being good to yourself as you are to others, treat wounds that you may not have even known were there, and assure you are becoming the best therapist you can be.

Therapists need therapy too!
